I never guessed that once I “traveled” to this new social site- I can’t quite call it social media or social networking. More like social gossip? I realized what an amazing tool we marketers of retail products have in Pinterest. I haven’t spent much time plumbing the depths of this site on behalf of my clients, but I can promise you, I will. In the meantime, I have a question for you, dear reader. We know that a recommendation for a particular store or brand or book carries more weight coming from a friend. Do you find yourself placing the same amount of weight in a recommendation from an actual real-person friend whose Pinterest board you follow as you do in any old Pinterest pinner’s recommendations? I find, it doesn’t really matter to me- if I like something when I see it, then I like it, no matter if I truly know the person who pinned it or not. You?

Following a failed first product, Ben, Evan, and I started work on
Pinterest with a simple idea: make an internet service where people
can create and share collections of images — an online take on the
time-honored tradition of collecting your favorite things in
photo-albums, on refrigerators, in dog-eared stacks of clippings, or,
of course, on physical cork-boards.

Although it’s hard to imagine today, I lost sleep when we launched the

The citizen journalists of the week, according to Social Media Voice, are all the bloggers and brave alternative and online news outlets who are honestly showing us real video of what is happening in the Citibank branches that the Occupy protesters are protesting. As a teacher of New Media, I appreciate the opportunity to share with students so much more about the importance of Citizen Journalism than a textbook ever could.

These videos and those who engage in responsible reporting of Occupy’s Citibank related protests, especially the one in New York on October 15, provide student journalists the opportunity to think critically, examine the believability of reports, and examine the difference in coverage between traditional media and the many different forms of media created and reported by the citizenry.

shows a protest resulting in protesters being charged with criminal trespassing and arrested inside a Citibank. As of noon today (ten full days after the event), the only traditional news outlets to cover the event with any amount of honesty (based on what we can all see with our own eyes in a number of videos) was, believe it or not, two local Fox News channels: Dallas and Boston. Those traditional outlets that did cover it repeated the claims of authorities and printed word-for-word the public relations simplistic statement put out on Citibank’s corporate website. In that particular statement, the PR writers say that the protesters were “very disruptive.” I laugh that they could get away with such vague accusations, and have them reported with no further question or comment. I am required to be much more specific and detailed even on discipline referrals I occasionally write at school. You would think a corporate giant would want to define exactly how their office was “disrupted.” The videos show a peaceful protest, with no one but the police acting violent. How were the New York police violent? Just watch the videos.

My challenge to you: Find a true and honest account of Citibank’s actions as well as the police’s actions as shown in these videos somewhere in the traditional media. Ifyou find it, please post the link here, with a comment.
